Tribal Librarian - Betsy HostetterApril showers bring May flowers! The library gathering made flowers for our graduates! We all made flowers so when April and Jeremy walked down the aisle they could say “Wow, those flowers are breath taking, and everyone in this room helped make them for US!”  Mothers Day is on the 9th. School will be out on the 19th of May.  I am working on a theme for our summer reading club. Summer Reading Club begins a week after school has ended.

Tribal Librarian - Betsy HostetterApril Fool’s Day is on a Thursday. Be quick that day!  Easter and Russian Easter are both on the 4th of April. Taxes are due on Thursday, April 15th. Earth Day is on the 22nd.

I went to a Library Conference the first part of March; I thank you for sending me there! I wanted to copy myself 5 times more so that I could go to all the interesting sessions!  I felt like a sponge during that time, absorbing everything and anything that I saw and heard!!! The most important thing the speakers who did Oral History sessions told me is to have patience! One of our goals for next year is to record histories for the community of Igiugig.

And surprisingly only ONE …KID… got all sixteen questions right!  We just finished applying for the IMLS Basic grant and the Alaska State grant. Thank you Sandy, Roz and AlexAnna for helping us out!  We could not have done it without all of you!!!

Tribal Librarian - Betsy HostetterGroundhog Day is on Tuesday the 2nd; it will determine IF we will be having spring early. If you want snow, wish that it sees its own shadow!  Happy Valentine’s Day and it comes on a Sunday this year. President’s Day is on the 15th, and Elizabeth Peratrovich Day is on the 16th. (see http://library.thinkquest.org/11313/Early_History/Native_Alaskans/elizabeth.html) for more information on Elizabeth Peratrovich). I just finished entering the new books the Village Council bought through the Book Fair into the system. Books we bought were mainly adult fiction, some Alaska books and some easy books. Please stop by the library to take a look at the new selection we have. I put the new books in a section in their own “spot,” so they will be easier to find.

Let It Snow

Tribal Librarian - Betsy Hostetter“Let it snow!” was our December theme. My plan was to let everyone that came build snowmen and drink hot cocoa, and mingle with friends, but as the weather became warmer, my thinking turned 180 degrees! I had to think of something else and fast. So then I pondered around… for this I needed my brain! So, I turned on the computer, and started browsing through the Internet. I DO love the internet! That is when the ideas came “pouring into my brain!” I saw ideas that made me say “Wow, I never thought we could make that!”  My eyes literally popped open; when I saw “How to make a 3D paper snowflake”. “This,” I said to myself, “is a GRAND idea!” So, I printed a copy of directions on how to make it.  I took some scrap paper; thinking that this project would not work out as well as I thought it would, but I did surprise myself! I was amazed! I was speechless! I then showed off my first snowflake to my daughter; she thought it was cool. So, I made another snowflake with “cooler” paper. The snowflakes I made were great.
