Igiugig Village Council’s bilingual children’s books aim to inspire our community in the art of storytelling, illustrating, and learning the publishing process.

These Yup’ik stories were told by Igiugig elders Mike Andrew and Mary Olympic in 2007.

Be sure to visit the Naaqi website for updates and purchasing information.

Below is a tentative list of the books and publishing dates.

  • Aqvautet: The Race - Released in December 2021 and available from Igiugig Village Council while supplies last.
  • Kaviaq (Red Fox and Goose) - Coming in late Fall 2022
  • Porcupine & Beaver - Coming in 2023
  • Mink & Raven - Coming in 2024
  • Qarruuk - Coming in 2025

The stories were adapted for print by a team of individuals, including AlexAnna Salmon (story gatherer, translations), Annie Wilson and Evelyn Yanez (Elders & language consultants), Ann Luthy (text, design & illustrations), Sassa Peterson (translations & editing), Andyn Gunlik (editing), Beth Chun (text, consulting editor), Gary Anderson (tech support), and A.J. Gooden (text, project coordinator). The book was published by Igiugig Village Council for future generations, made possible through grants from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Administration of Native Americans.
