Summer 2022 in Igiugig started off busy with fishing boats zooming on the Kvichak and kids playing in the pristine waters of Lake Iliamna. We have been experiencing very hot and dry weather, so please remember to burn responsibly! Later this summer, Igiugig will once again be the host of this year’s BBNC Culture Camp, which will be taking place in late July. Other village plans include completing the school duplex, building another duplex, and inheriting two Tiny Homes to be turned into safe houses. We want to remind everyone that we have subsistence salmon permits available at the Hangar and that we are running our Summer Reading Club this year - don’t forget to join!
This issue of our newsletter includes some beautiful and exciting stories from the community. First of all, we are happy to celebrate our 2022 graduates Kiara Nelson and Kaylee Hill. AlexAnna then has some lovely updates to share about the Iliamna Communities Teaching Culture through Native Languages project. Then there are some community photos to showcase Alice’s 90th birthday and a beautiful class project that some of our kiddos completed this year. A.J. has some wonderful pieces to share about upcoming library projects. You will also have the chance to meet a few newcomers to town and read a letter from Irmelin, friend of the village. Finally we will be remembering the precious people that we have lost in the past year, and taking time to appreciate the beauty of the local fiddlehead. Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoy!
